Our origins A bit of history The ocean used to cover a great part of the region and formed bays. As the ocean was
withdraving, plants grew. The decomposition of organic matters created a
thick layer of peat on which grew both acid and bitter grass as well as trees, the leaves
of which were thorny hence the name of AIGREFEUILLE
(bitter leaf in English). |

All the freestone tools (axes, blades and scrapers) -found in marhes - are related to a period extending from 10.000 years to 4.000 before Christ and show the presence of human being as early as that time. It is worth knowing that in 1494, Louis de Montbron, who was then Squire, Lord of Chalandray of the land and Lordship of AIGREFEUILLE DAUNIX, gave lands to the villeins and inhabitants of Aigrefeuille, lands which are referred to in the act of settlement as marshes, commonly called the big and the small marshes. Little did he know that a few centuries later , that Site de Frace, still belonging to the village, would be an attracting, peaceful and relaxing place. More recently, the village was partly demolished during the second world war. In November 18th 1948, the military cross with bars was given to the village to reward its inhabitants patriotism who had suffered a lot and had endured many tribulations. The 12th century church kept on changing over the last centuries. It has a 17th century facade with a flat chevet, a neo roman 19th century tower, capitals under the ancient carré, and some culots which have sculpted personages. It goes without saying that we are very proud of the patrimony we try to focus on, and we hope our village will benefit from its tourist and economic aftermath.
